A new study of business units confirms an earlier relationship study by John Gottman that found it essential in relationships to be much more positive than negative at a ratio of either 5 or 6 to 1. While constructive criticism is helpful when performance falls below the median, we need to be much more positive with our wives, husbands, partners, co-workers and children than most of us think.
Try it for a week. Take a pulse on your positive comments to negative comment index and see how people react. Begin to notice places where you can encourage effort and give specific positive feedback. Not only will you feel better, it could pay huge dividends.
